As promised in yesterday’s email, here’s the daily update from Zoo Accounting regarding the Coronavirus.

  • The Prime Minister is to hold a daily press conference to keep the public and businesses updated.
  • In yesterday’s press conference, the focus was on the scientific and health side of the virus. New measures announced included:
    • Public to avoid gatherings and crowded places – although pubs, clubs, etc are allowed to remain open
    • Everyone to work from home if they can
    • Care home visits should be limited to necessary visits only
    • Refrain from using the NHS where possible, to help with the burden
    • If anybody in a home has a fever or persistent cough, everyone living there must stay at home for 14 days. If you work for a company with 250 employees or less, you will be entitled to SSP from day 1.  The government will reimburse businesses.
    • Schools to remain open at the moment. We, at Zoo, anticipate this will change in the next 7 days.
  • The current calculations are that 260,000 people will die from this virus in the UK, and the measures introduced above aims to reduce that to thousands or tens of thousands.

Rishi Sunak is expected to appear in the press conference with Boris Johnson later today.  This indicates that today’s press conference will be more financial that yesterday’s, and we should understand more about the measures that the government are putting into place, including how the £12bn promised in last weeks budget will be used.
